Rams come out of box hitting in season-opening win
Daily Local News - March 25, 2005 by BRIAN DELANEY, Staff Writer

CALN - Spring-Ford coach Bruce Brobst firmly believes that pitchers, not hitters, have the upper hand in the early stages of the high school baseball season. The rationalization is that hitters need more adjustment time in transitioning from batting-practice pitching to live pitching, while hurlers can spend the ‘preseason’ fine-tuning their mechanics and location. However, in Thursday afternoon’s season-opener against Coatesville, Brobst’s own squad went against the grain in displaying midseason form at the plate - at least through the first three innings - in a 6-3 nonleague victory over the Red Raiders on the junior varsity field at Coatesville High School.

"We did hit the ball well," said Brobst, whose team tallied 11 hits, five of which were for extra bases. "I’m certainly pleased about that."

The Rams struck quickly in the top half of the first inning against Coatesville starting pitcher Matt Gallis, when cleanup hitter Brian Maul crushed a two-out triple to left field that scored teammate Marty Earl. Sophomore Steve Young then followed with a triple of his own - to almost the exact same spot -- before scoring on Josh Bernat’s single that gave the visitors a 3-0 lead. Maul, a senior catcher, finished 3-for-4 on the day, adding a single and double to his game-opening three-bagger.

"I had been struggling a little bit (so far)," said Maul, referring to recent practices and a scrimmage with Methacton. "Today was a breakout day for me."

Teammate Jashank Sampat also contributed three hits while Bernat knocked in two runs. But as the temperature dipped into the low-30’s, Spring-Ford’s bats cooled off. Coatesville’s, however, never heated up.

With soggy field conditions and an unrelenting bone-chilling wind contributing to a less-than stellar baseball environment, both Brobst and Coatesville coach Hal Ziegler knew that some early-season rust would show, and it did.

The Red Raiders, who return talented hitters like Vince Belnome, Chad Walton and University of Pennsylvania-bound Jeff Cellucci, struggled collectively at the plate, stranding eight runners on base including five in scoring position.

Designated hitter Charles Johnson and right fielder Dom Fantanarosa led the hosts by combining for four of the team’s seven hits.

"I was hoping we’d hit the ball better than we did," Ziegler said. "But it gives the kids a chance to get some of the rust off."

Spring-Ford received a gritty effort from starter Travis Kryder, who went five full innings for the win and worked out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the fourth while holding onto a 5-2 lead. Young polished off the Red Raiders with two impressive innings in relief, surrendering just one hit while striking out three.

"Travis is a competitor and he’s such a smart kid," Brobst said. "I call pitches, but he knows exactly where to put it."

For Coatesville, Ross McNiel started at third base but pitched the final four innings in relief and was hardly touched. He allowed just one run on four hits in keeping the Red Raiders (0-1) within striking distance, but a string of big hits never came for Ziegler’s club.

Lights dedicated in memory of Brandon McCool
Coatesville Ledger - March 31, 2005 by DON HENRY

It was a chance to honor Brandon and realize the efforts of his parents to see the field lights and dugouts at the Coatesville Area Senior High School dedicated in his memory.

McCool was a member of the Red Raiders. A second baseman, McCool passed away on October 12, 2000, from a rare form of cancer. Because of the love their son had for the game, his parents established a fund for lights to be installed at the Coatesville field.

The Baseball Boosters would join in the McCool's efforts and those many others involved to see that the Red Raiders would have a first class baseball field. An incalculable amount of time went into their efforts. "Thanks to all the businesses and friends that helped us to make it happen," said Bill McCool Sunday night. "We couldn't do it on our own." By April 2001, the McCools along with friends and members of the baseball booster club had raised $23,000, and then from an auction in October 2001 held at the high school, they raised another $36,000. In all, Bill McCool said they raised about $80,000.

The Coatesville Baseball Booster Club also raising money to put in dugouts at the field, on both the home and visitor's side, and fencing for about $15,000. The cost for the dugouts would have been close to $17,000, but was done for $5,000 because club members did the work. Club members also laid almost 6,000 feet of wire for lights.

The results of all of their efforts culminated Saturday with the dedication of the lights and the in-ground dugouts.

Saturday was a time of joy and a time for some tears as about 240 people turned out under the threatening skies. Voices of the speakers remembering McCool cracked at times, tears could be seen being dabbled from eyes of listeners. It was an emotional ceremony. For baseball fans only. And for friends and loved ones of Brandon McCool.

During his remarks Coatesville baseball coach Hal Ziegler noted it was said he was never happy. Ziegler said "work on the field wasn't quite done yet." He wanted to see a walkway from the parking lot to the field. Pointing to the backstop, he said, "See this backstop, (Ray) Chenger had this backstop when he was coach. We need a new one."

Ziegler also read a poem he was written titled "Brandon,". "As long as I coach at Coatesville, the Number 6 (McCool's number) will never be worn by another player," said Ziegler.

On the backstop behind Ziegler was a square banner, a baseball on it bearing the number 6 and the name McCool. A Coatesville baseball uniform hung on the fence next to the banner.

Bob Yearsley called the attendees' attention to the scoreboard down the left field line. Another sign had been attached bearing the legend "Field Lights in memory of Brandon McCool." A number 6, in red, was also included on the sign. Just before the McCool family officially turned on the lights, Brandon's father, Bill McCool, spoke. "Tonight is wonderful," he said. "Brandon felt he was privileged to know his teammates. He knew what Coatesville proud was every time he put on his uniform."

Earlier in the ceremony, Rev. Carlson, opened with some remarks and a short prayer. Carlson noted that Brandon gave him the baseball hat he was wearing, and before beginning the prayer said: "I'm going to leave my hat on. You can too. "Brandon's passions was to do the best he could with what he had," said Carlson. "He worked real hard."

Chester County Commissioner Andrew Dinniman represented the other board members in presenting a citation from the board to Kim and Bill McCool. Dinniman said the attendees were "remembering the spirit and Brandon." Caln Township commissioner Arnold Kring was also present on behalf of the other board members. "We're proud this field is located in this township," said Kring. "You make us proud."

As the ceremonies broke up and the Red Raiders gathered for an night practice, Boosters president Bob Jenkins smiled. "We had a lot of people and we had a lot of fun," said Jenkins. "And thanks to Brandon (glancing upward) the lights work and the weather cooperated." (Editor Bryan G. Robinson contributed to this story.)

Lunardi was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and also struck out five in two innings of relief. Drew Constable had three hits and an RBI. Brian Rostick picked up the win after allowing two runs and seven hits in five innings.

Vince Belnome drove in both runs for the Red Raiders (2-1 league), while Ross McNiel added two hits.

Raiders come back against Whippets
Coatesville Ledger - April 7, 2005 by DON HENRY

In the Ches-Mont League baseball opener for both teams, Corey Rhood led off the Whippets first with a double to right center field. John Ciodo dropped a sacrifice bunt attempt that Coatesville starting pitcher Chad

Walton fielded but his hurried throw couldn't be handled by first baseman John Pugh. That allowed Rhood to score with Ciodo taking second. Ciodo then scored on a sacrifice fly by Matt Reinert.

The Red Raiders wasted little time getting started in their portion of the first inning as Vince Belnome led off with a walk. Matt Gallis then dropped a perfect sacrifice bunt down the third baseline to move Belnome to second.

Belnome cruised home as catcher Jeff Cellucci doubled to the left field fence to cut the Whippets' lead to 2-1. Walton reached with a single to deep short. Dom Fantanarosa struck out.

With two out, and Ross McNeil batting, Coatesville worked a delayed double steal to perfection. Walton broke for second, stopping halfway. On the throw to second, Cellucci broke for home, beating the return throw in a close play at the plate to knot the game at two.

McNeil put the Red Raider up 3-2 with a single to left.

The Whippets would again threaten in the top of the second taking advantage of Walton's early game control problems, leaving two men on, both runners coming on walks.

Coatesville added four more runs in the bottom of the third to take a 7-2 lead, giving Walton all the runs he would need. Belnome would again get the Red Raiders going, starting the second off with a double to center. Gallis reached base with a bunt single. Cellucci hit into a fielder's choice but was safe at first on an error on the throw home on Belnome. Walton aided his own cause with a single up the middle to plate Gallis and give the Raiders a 5-2 lead. Fantanarosa's sacrifice fly and a long single to the right field fence upped the score to 7-2.

Walton, who was working behind in the early going and running deep counts on the batters, settled down, holding West to single runs in the fifth and sixth innings. After hitting Reinert with a pitch in the top of the seventh, Walton got Dunn on a fly out to center. Barber reached base on an error, but Walton ended the contest by getting Kearney to ground into an inning-ending double play.

Walton, one of the mainstays of last season's staff notched his first win of the season. In pitching a complete game, Walton walked two while striking out seven.

"We just didn't make the plays," West coach Brian Chenger said after the contest. "We gave up too many runs with sloppy defense." Coatesville coach Hal Ziegler said, "We did all right. We hit well. The early season is working on correcting mistakes. That's what the early season is all about."

Game notes: Bill McCool threw out the ceremonial pitch for Coatesville. All their home games will be played under the lights beginning at 6:45 p.m. Walton, McNeil, and Johnson each had two hits for the Red Raiders. Dunn, with three hits, and Rhood with two, led the Whippet hitters. Chris Ott started for Downingtown and took the loss with Steve Westerman, Greg Runyen, and Travis Pearson following Ott on the mound.

In junior varsity play, Downingtown West defeated Coatesville 7-6 in eight innings. Steve Fitch, coming to the Red Raiders from West Chester Henderson is the new junior varsity coach. For the young Raiders, Ben White pitched four shutout innings with Danny Gross pitching the final four and taking the loss. Scotty A'Hara and Woody Blackburn each had three hits for Coatesville, while Johnny Groff was 2-3.

Raiders nip Shanahan
Coatesville Ledger - April 7, 2005 by DON HENRY

The win boosts Coatesville early season Ches-Mont record to 2-0, while the Eagles fall to 0-2 in the League. For Shanahan, it was their second close loss in a many games. The previous night the Eagles led defending League champion West Chester East most of the contest, only to lose in the final two innings of play.

"It was a good game," Shanahan coach George Hadfield said afterward. "From our standpoint, we have to learn to win the close games." Hadfield continued, "I'm pleased with the pitchers. Coatesville is a good hitting team."

After being retired in the top of the first in order, Shanahan scored first as Mike Dunn was hit by a pitch, Kurt Yannelli followed with a single to center, Dunn stopping at second. Dunn moved to third as Dave Koczirka grounded out to first. Dunn then scored as Garrett Grejdis' grounded to third. Gallis juggled the ball and his throw to first pulled Chad Walton off the bag.

Coatesville batting in the bottom of the second, took a 2-1 lead as McNeil singled to left. Charley Johnson grounded into a fielder's choice, McNeil out at second on the play. Johnson motored around to third base as Gary Walton's high pop fly dropped into the no-man's land just down the right field line just out of reach of the right fielder and first baseman.

Colby Shesko walked to load the bases and Vince Belnome's single to right drove in Johnson and Walton. Belnome was out at second trying to stretch the single.

The Red Raiders added an insurance run in the fourth inning as McNeil hit a one out, one bounce liner to the center field fence. Johnson drove him home with a long fly double to the bottom of the fence in right field. Bishop Shanahan starter Andrew Levasseur then bore down to retire the side.

Shanahan got one run back in the top of the fifth as Grejdus, Levasseur and Nick Primavera rapped out consecutive singles. Coatesville catcher Jeff Cellucci turned in the play of the game, with a snap throw to third base picking off Levasseur for the first out. Brian Ward then grounded out. McNeil got out of the inning as Dunn grounded to Gallis. Chad Walton made a nifty scoop of Gallis' low throw to end the inning.

Gallis came on in the sixth inning and threw two scoreless innings in relief to preserve the win.

McNeil, who struck out three and didn't walk a batter, said afterward, "I tried to throw first pitch strikes. My curve wasn't working all that well, so I just tried to hit my spots the best I could."

Coatesville coach Hal Ziegler noted, "We used a lot of people. We got good pitching from Ross and Matt Gallis. It was a good team effort. We moved some guys around and they responded well."

Red Raiders baseball put pieces together in win
Daily Local News - April 15, 2005 by PETER DiGIOVANNI, Staff Writer

The Red Raiders have not gotten consistent hitting or pitching in the early going.

Well, everything came together for the Red Raiders on Thursday afternoon against Downingtown West.

Coatesville (4-2, Ches-Mont, 5-4 overall) banged out 13 hits and got a good pitching performance from Steve Morrison in its 12-4 Ches-Mont League win.

"We have been struggling hitting the ball lately," Coatesville coach Hal Ziegler said. "It was nice to see us bang out some hits."

Morrison used his curve ball to get through 6Ï innings, but his biggest asset was getting out of some early-inning jams.

Downingtown West (2-4, Ches-Mont, 3-4 overall) put runners on base in the second, third, and fourth innings only to not get any of those runners home.

The Whippets left six men on base, a fact which frustrated coach Brian Chenger.

"We have to be more consistent and get some clutch hits," Chenger said. "Coatesville got those clutch hits and we need to get there."

The biggest Whippets threat came in the bottom of the third inning. Downingtown West loaded the bases with one out against Morrison, with Ryan Werkheiser at the plate.

The designated hitter hit a cue shot that looked destined to go into left field and score two runs. But Red Raiders’ third baseman Matt Gallis leaped high into the air and snagged the ball, then touched third base, doubling off the baserunner.

"I bear down more when men are on base," Morrison said. "I just let my defense do the job. Matt Gallis made a tremendous play."

The catch kept the score 3-0 Coatesville and seemed to take a little air out of the Whippets.

Coatesville jetted out to the early lead on a Ross McNiel solo home run in the second inning and Vince Belnome’s two RBI double in the third off Downingtown West starter Chris Ott.

Morrison kept the Whippets at bay after that giving his teammates time to pad their lead.

Coatesville broke open the game in the sixth inning, scoring five runs on three hits, the big blow being a two-run homer to center field by Dom Fantanarosa.

Ziegler seemed pleased with the win, especially the surprise effort by Morrison.

"We pitched him because we have a few other guys with sore arms," Ziegler said. "He pitched well and he will get better each time he goes out there."

Coatesville 16, Bishop Shanahan 8
Daily Local News - April 20, 2005

Kurt Yannelli cracked a pair of home runs for Shanahan (2-5, 3-6).

Raiders down 2 D-towns
Coatesville Ledger - April 21, 2005 by DON HENRY

The Coatesville Area Senior High School baseball team traveled for two games last week, gaining a 504 win over Downingtown East on Tuesday, April 12 and on Thursday, April 14 handily defeating Downingtown West 12-4.

In Tuesday's game, Coatesville's Chad Walton pitched a complete game and batted in the go-ahead and winning runs over a young Downingtown East team.

Mike DeRafelo was the tough-luck loser for East in a five-inning relief stint. He came on in the third inning in relief of Matt Gallagher who was charged with three runs in two innings of work.

The Cougars jumped out on top in the home first as Walton struggled with his control. Kyle Roberts led the inning off with a line single to right, then stole second. Scott Stevens brought him home with an RBI single to right. Justin Clafferty scored on a single by Robbie Heald to give East its only lead of the game.

Coatesville came right back in the top of the second to take a 3-2 lead. The score was quickly tied at 2-2 as Gary Walton walked and Charley Johnson followed with a home run over the center field fence.

Matt Gallis reached base on an error at short, and later scored on an RBI double down the left field line by Chad Walton.

East came back to knot the game at three all in the home second as Roberts hit a two-out double to the center field fence. Roberts came into to score the tying run as Chris Pugh's grounder to first was mishandled.

Both pitchers settled in over the next two innings before Coatesville reached DeRafelo for a run in the top of the fifth inning. With one out, Vince Bellnome drew his second walk of the game. Cellucci's single to right moved Bellnome to third. Bellnome scored as Dom Fantanarosa grounded into a 6-4 fielder's choice.

The score became 5-3 in the sixth as Gallis singled to left and moved to second on Jamison's second sac bunt of the game. Chad Walton singled home Gallis with the insurance run and his second RBI of the game.

Walton would need that run as East came back with a run of the own in the home sixth. DeRafelo helped himself with a single to left and moved to second on a ground out by Bob Mainello. DeRafelo scored on Roberts third hit of the game, a single to right.

Walton recorded his second win and his third complete game of the season by setting East down in the seventh, allowing a one out single by Stevens before retiring the side.

After securing the win, Walton commented: "I don't think I had my best stuff. I struggled with control the whole game. I thought my curve ball was only average but it got the job done at times."

Moving to 3-2 in the Ches-Mont with the win, Coatesville coach Hal Ziegler said dryly: "I guess we're all right. We got the win." Commenting on Johnson's home run, Zielgler said, in something of an understatement: "He hit the ball real hard. But that's what we expect of him." Johnson's drive carried about 400 feet into a breeze that was blowing in most of the contest.

East coach Russ Wren praised DeRafelo's relief work. "He gave us a gutsy performance," said Wren. Wren also pointed out the youth and inexperience of his team this year, and praised them. "These young guys are out there competing every night," he said. "There's only one senior on the team (shortstop Kyle Roberts)."

DeRafelo, a junior, said: "We came up a little short. We played a good game and we put the bat on the ball against a good pitcher."

West routed

On Thursday, April 14, Coatesville lead the West Whippets 3-0 after five innings. The Raiders erupted by eight runs in the next two en route to a 12-4 rout.

Steve Morrison won his second game of the season, his first in the Ches-Mont as Coatesville improved to 4-2 in the league. Morrison went 6 1/3 innings before giving way to Matt Gallis in relief as West tallied all their runs in their final at bat.

With the loss, falls to 2-4 in the Ches-Mont.

Ross McNeil gave Coatesville a 1-0 lead with a home run over the center field fence leading off the second inning.

In the third inning, Coatesville tacked on two more runs for a 3-0 lead as Gallis and Chad Walton scored as Belnome rattled a double off the right field fence.

With Morrison silencing the West bats by allowing just four hits, Coatesville broke the contest wide open in the sixth scoring five times on just three hits. In that inning, Gallis had two RBIs with a single to left that scored McNeil and Gary Walton and Fantanarosa brought home two with a home run to right center field.

Coatesville added three more in the top of the seventh and carried a 12-0 lead as West came to bat in the home half of the inning. Morrison would lose his shut out as he struggled with his control. Morrison gave way to Gallis with the bases loaded and one run in. Gallis also struggled to find the plate, giving up West's final three runs, all of them charged to Morrison.

Corey Rhood had an RBI double. Andrew Dunn brought in two with a single and Ryan Werkheiser also had an RBI hit.

"My curve ball was on," Morrison said in assessing his performance. Morrison also credited his teammates. "My defense backed me up real well and we also hit the ball real well," he said.

Zielgler said simply: "We're starting to play a little better. We didn't have any errors. That's a good sign."

The win boosts Coatesville's Ches-Mont record to 5-2, while Shanahan falls to 2-5.

Gary Walton shrugged off his 4-4 day at the plate, saying "It was a good team win."

However, he did acknowedge, "I felt good at the plate."

Bishop Shanahan coach George Hadfield said simply, "We can't get 10 runs down. We had just one bad inning, but it's too hard coming back. We have trouble bunching our runs to get the big inning."
